A 59 Clearly Stills Beckons At Gran Canaria Lopesan Open

Golf’s magical 59 still beckons with two rounds to play at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open.

One day one we had a new Meloneras course record of seven-under 63s set by four players.

That was lowered by two shots on day two with nine-under par 61s by Dane Thorbjorn Olesen, England’s Sam Horsfield and Scot Connor Syme.

Also on day two there were three scores 62s and nine scores of 63.

Of the 74 players who made the very low five-under par there was only one who did not break 70 on day two.

And of those who made the cut they shared 17 eagles and a whopping 390 birdies.

It will take an 11-under par tally on the Gran Canaria course for someone to join England’s Ollie Fisher as only the second player in the now 49-year history of the European Tour to break 60 and with Fisher achieving the historic first in the second round of the 2018 Portugal Masters at Vilamoura.

And while Fisher achieved his historic effort on what you would describe the tougher par-71 Victoria course, those left to play the final two rounds in Gran Canaria are competing on a par-70 ‘holiday island destination’ layout.

Olesen was conscious of shooting 59 in his record-equalling second round of 61.

“The thought of 59 didn’t really come to mind, I didn’t even know what the par was to be honest,” said the Dane and looking to win for a first time since capturing the 2018 Italian Open.

“Yesterday afternoon I was just so much in the present and wasn’t thinking about my score too much. I think that helped”.

And Horsfield, who like Olesen and Syme posted a new career low, was also thinking of the golf’s magic number

“It was pretty funny as I told my caddie walking off 17 tee that we needed birdie-eagle finish for a 59,” said Horsfield.

“I gave myself a lot of opportunities and I feel like I’m putting really well so lots of hope for the weekend.”

And as a European Tour official out in Gran Canaria remarked:  “We are all very much on a 59 watch!”
