Scottish Golf Cancel Entire 2020 Competition Schedule

The news not surprisingly only gets worst with Scottish Golf now cancelling its entire 2020 schedule.

Scottish Golf has been in lock-down mode now for some weeks with some of the amateur game’s leading men’s and women’s events already postponed.

The administrators of the game in the Home of Golf nation have led the way in keeping all those playing and administering golf abreast of an ever-changing COVID-19 affected climate but now feel the best move forward is to cancel the 2020 season and start afresh in 2021.

Among those events cancelled are Scottish Golf’s ‘blue-ribboon’ tournaments including the Scottish Women’s Amateur in June at Ladybank and the Scottish Men’s Amateur to have been played in July at Murcar Links.

Also cancelled have been the national Boys and Girls’ Championships to be staged at Haggs Castle in July.

It was a tough decision for Eleanor Cannon, as Chairperson of the governing bodies, in releasing a statement to 575 affiliated clubs.

“Scottish Golf, like its member clubs, is having to make some tough decisions in light of a significant delay in our member income, so that we can continue to support our clubs as we come through these difficult times,” said Cannon.

“To this end we have furloughed the majority of our employees and made the necessary decisions as regards our season’s calendar of events.

“We have taken the decision to cancel all our all our events and our performance programmes for the remainder of the 2020 season.

“Scottish Golf want to support you and your clubs during these challenging times.

“We continue to liaise with sportscotland and the Government and we will ensure that we communicate with you as and when decisions about the game are made.

“In time, we will all get back out there onto our courses. For now, we must look after each other and the communities that our clubs serve.

“Once we can start playing the game we love again, we will all work together to re-establish golf as the life blood of our communities.”

However, Scottish Golf’s move comes in contrast to it’s sister body, England Golf who has chosen to only cancel events up to late July.
