Ireland-Born Trio Of Open Champions Head BMW PGA Field

The Open Championship and Ireland-born winning trio of Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington head the strong list of stars to tee-up in next week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The European Tour released the full field for the fourth Rolex Series event of the season late today (Friday).

The presence of of McIlroy, Lowry and Harrington in the field will be a first occasion since Lowry brilliantly captured the 148th Open Championship the Irish trio will tee-up in the same event.

And joining the threesome in easily the strongest ‘regular’ European Tour event this year included 10 members of last year’s victorious European Ryder Cup team.

They include McIlroy, Justin Rose, Jon Rahm, Francesco Molinari, Tommy Fleetwood, Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter, Alex Noren and Tyrrell Hatton.

The only two members of the team missing next week will be Sergio Garcia and the suspended Thorbjorn Olesen.

Also teeing-up at Tour HQ with a strong American contingent and with the event clearly benefitting from the bizarre scenario of the PGA Tour bowing to the NFL by ending the season in the last week of August.

The American presence is headed by Masters champion, Patrick Reed along with Tony Finau, Billy Horshell and Andrew Putnam and will all four now members of the European Tour.

Major winners Ernie Els, Martin Kaymer an Danny Willett will also take to the ‘Burma Road’ course.

Other Irish in the event to herald the start of the 2020 European Ryder Cup qualifying process include Paul Dunne.
