Tiger Snares Genesis Eagle As He Seeks To Avoid Riviera Cut

Pacific Palisades, California …

Tiger Woods displayed plenty of brilliance when the tournament host holed-out for an eagle in his second round of the badly rain-affected Genesis Open near Santa Monica.

Woods, and his other competitors, had less than 12-hours between ending Friday’s rain-drenched play and returning to the course and be in place at 5am Saturday local time to complete his second round.

Woods had managed to play 12 second round holes when play was halted at 5.20pm local US time and with the World No. 13 right on the expected cut-off mark of one-under par $US 7.6m event.

Woods had posted a morning one-over par 70 that included four three-putts in a poor 36-putt opening display.

He commenced his second round to move to three-under par in total with birdies at his first and third holes , and the 10th and 12th on the card, but gave those shots back with bogeys at his seventh and ninth holes.

Then in heading to the first, and the 10th hole of his round, Woods smashed  303-yard drive off the tee the fairway well below.

He then put his second shot some 43-feet to the left side of the flag and then drew the loudest roar in two days of miserable weather in holing the putt for an eagle ‘3’.

But with rain again continuing and darkness descending, Woods gave both shots back it bogeys on the next two holes, and when the siren sounded he was back to even for his round and still at one-under par for the tournament.

And as Woods emerged from the long climb up stairs to the back of the 18th green, the end of play could not have come any sooner for the 43-year old.

“It was a tough day but I’m stiff right now,” he said.

“It got pretty chilly towards the end, the ball wasn’t going very far. It was just amazing how well and how good JT (Justin Thomas) putted today, he made everything today. He made tough conditions look easy.

“I have not seen this course play together I think when Robert Allenby and Charles Howell had that big huge playoff and it was raining, it was like the whole day on Sunday (2001 Nissan Open, six-man play-off).

“This was just, it wasn’t raining that hard, but it was just spitting enough where it was annoying. And the temperature kept dropping, wind kept picking up, laying down, picking up, laying down. There’s some long holes out there.”

Rory McIlroy, who is grouped with Woods, stood outside the Riviera Ladies Locker Room, and with photos adorning the walls of Hollywood legends and Riviera members, Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Mary Pickford, removing his water-proof trousers given a meeting room within the Ladies Locker Room is again being used as the official scorer’s room.

And he spoke of his delight in managing to turn around his game to be four-under par for his round that has seen him leap from a share of 110th after his poor opening one-over 72, to be now tied for 23rd at three-under.

“It was a good turnaround to start my second round as I didn’t play to dissimilar this afternoon than I played this morning,” he said.

“I just managed to get a couple of more putts to drop early on and that was pretty much the key as I didn’t birdie the two par-5s on the back nine and my outward half this afternoon.

“But then I have birdied the first both rounds and that’s nice

“I’ve hit some good shots, converted a couple so it’s now an early start tomorrow and another funny day, so I’m hoping now to pick-up a few more birdies in the holes I have to play.

“We then have to wait for all those boys to finish their second rounds and see where we finish-up in terms of playing tomorrow.

“I feel as though I’m back into the event, so a few more birdies in my last five holes tomorrow morning would be very nice.”

Justin Thomas (five-under for his round) along with Aussie Adam Scot (five under also for his round), were tied for the lead at 10-under par ahead of a restart at 7am Saturday local time.

Jordan Spieth, and the official first round leader in shooting a seven-under par 64, was not due to commence his second round to 8.22am local time Saturday.
