Molinari Now Targets World No. 1 & Olympic Gold After Receiving Italy’s ‘Golden Collar’ Award

Francesco Molinari is now targeting becoming  World No. 1 and also winning a 2020 Olympic Gold medal after being honoured with Italy’s prestigious Collari d’Oro (Golden Collar) award in a glittering presentation ceremony Wednesday night in Rome.

The Collari d’Oro is the highest honour in Italian sport and honours the achievements of Italian-born Olympic and Paralmpic champions along with other sportspeople, personalities and societies.

Molinari is the first Italian golfer to win the coveted award.

Francesco Molinari presented with the prestigious Collari d’Oro (Golden Collar) award in Rome on Wednesday night.

And in accepting the award at the CONI Salone d’Onore in Rome, Molinari indicated it was his goal to reach the pinnale of the golf world rankings and also deliver Italy a gold medal should he qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

“I am over the moon to be honoured with the Collari d’Oro,” said the current World No. 7.

“My dream now is to win a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and continue chasing the dream to become world number one, and in the process become an example for generations to come.”

The 36-year old Molinari was presented with the Collari d’Oro medal by the President of CONI Giovanni Malago.

Molinari’s latest honour comes just a week after being voted European Tour ‘Golfer of the Year’, the Association of Golf Writers (AGW) ‘Golfer of the Year’ while last Sunday night he joined Tiger Woods (2000) in receiving BBC TVs ‘World Sports Star of the Year’ award.

In a stunning 2018 season, Molinari also became the first Italian to win a Major in capturing the Open Championship while he became the first European Ryder Cup team member to win all five matches in Europe’s seven-point triumph in Versailles.

Molinari also captured the European Tour’s No. 1 crown and also the first Italian to achieve the feat while he also captured the BMM PGA Champoinship and also secured a first career victory on the PGA Tour in winning the Quicken Loans National.
