It’s 35-Years Since Europe Trailed 5 1/2 – 6 1/2 After Three Sessions – You Don’t Want To Know Final Result!

Chaska, Minnesota …

It’s been 35-years and back to the 1981 Ryder Cup at Walton Heath since Europe trailed 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 after the first three sessions of this year’s Ryder Cup.

The star-studded USA Team have won just 2 1/2 points since white washing the Europeans 4 zip in the opening day Foursomes.

Leading the European surge has been Rory McIlroy who wrapped-up day two with an eagle for he and Thomas Pieters to win the third of three victories in the first-round Fourballs.

McIlroy and Pieters then combined to humble Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler 4 & 2 that edged Europe to within point of their rivals.
The Spanish duo of Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera-Bello stun their American rivals in managing a half.

The American duo of Brooks Koepka and Brandt Snedeker kept their unbroken pairing in tact winning 3 & 2 over Henrik Stenson and rookie Matthew Fitzpatrick.

But Justin Rose and Chris Wood gelled superbly to put another European Team point on the board with a 1up win over Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson and make the overall score 6 – 5 in favour of the host country.
And it should have a two-point lead for the U.S. but the Spanish duo of Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello had other thoughts coming from 4 down through 11 holes and halve their match against Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

So the final result of the 1981 Ryder Cup – Europe 9 1/2 USA 18 1/2
