Perth-born Curtis Luck became only the third Australian to capture the prestigious U.S. Amateur championship and in the process earning a start in the 2017 Masters, U.S. Open and 146th Open Championship.
After being all square through 18 holes, Luck forged ahead to win winning eight holes in succession from the 20th for a convincing 6 & 4 drubbing of hometown favourite, Brad Dalke 6&4 at Oakland Hills in suburban Detroit.
Luck, who only just turned 20 and had his father, Stuart acting as caddy, follows in the footsteps of previous Australians to win the U.S. Amateur, Walter Travis (1900, 1901, 1903) and Nick Flanagan (2003).
Luck, who took 21 holes to win his semi-final on Saturday, joins an honour roll that includes Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
The affable Aussie indicated he had been planning to turn pro imminently, but that now has changed given being afforded entry into three of the four Majors in 2017.
“I think I’ll be staying amateur for at least a year now,” he said..
“I’m happy with that. It was something I was always thinking might happen.
“Playing these events give you that opportunity to get into some events that aren’t worth turning pro to miss.”
