“I remember vividly Michael Carruth winning a boxing gold medal in 1992 in Barcelona.

“Then there’s Ronnie Delaney who won the 1500 metres in Melbourne in 1956 who is now one of the proud elder statesmen of sport in Ireland.

“There is a number of Ireland Olympic legends you grow up admiring and I would have met at various award ceremonies I attended as a young kid and these were the people to look up to

“Certainly in the modern era Ireland has won a few more gold medals but certainly I grew up in an era where the likes of Ronnie Delaney, Hugh Russell and Eamon Coughlan were just huge personalities in Irish sport.
