R & A Hopeful Of Catching Tiger Woods On Royal Troon ‘Wire Cam’.

Royal Troon , Scotland … The R & A  is hopeful of catching Tiger Woods and everyone else who tees up in July’s Open Championship on ‘wire cam’.

The St. Andrews based body today announced a ‘wire cam’ will run the length of the famed ‘Postage Stamp’ hole at Royal Troon and venue for the 145th Open Championship.

The 123-yard par 3 eighth hole is one of the most famous par 3s on the Open Championship rota and was named the ‘Postage Stamp’ the William Park, a former golf correspondent for Sports Illustrated.

The hole is also surrounded by five bunkers and the R & A has a camera in each of the sand traps to catch all of the action.

However it was Rhodri Price, the R&A’s Director of Championship Operations, who explained how ‘wire cam’ will operate.

“I have been desperate to put a wire camera on the course for years, but due to the playing conditions of golf in terms of ball flight, particularly from the likes of Bubba Watson, it is very difficult normally to place a wire camera on the course without it getting in the way of play,” said Price.

“We recognise that, due to the short distance of the Postage Stamp, there was scope to get a wire camera in there on this iconic part of the golf course with the wonderful views.

“It will go all the way from the tee to a little winter green to left of the green. The Postage Stamp was screaming out to be a feature hole.”

However whether Woods will be captured on camera there remains to be seen, although the 14-time major winner has already registered for June’s US Open.

Woods has until the middle of May to do the same for the Open, but then Mike Woodcock, working with the R&A remarked: “We’ve had no indication at the moment but obviously we would welcome any of the players and particularly Tiger Woods.”
