It was some three weeks ago now we stopped by Talladega Superspeedway along I-20 in Alabama as we made our way to the Masters.
The I-20 runs from Texas right through to North Carolina and we picked it up just outside Vicksburg, Mississippi and it took us through Talladega, Atlanta and then to Augusta – about a 7-hour drive.
But then if your are a NASCAR fan this weekend the massive motorsports complex plays host to the Geico 500.
The Talladega circuit is located north of Talladega, Alabama. It is located on a former US Air Force base and constructed in 1969.
Talladega is the longest NASCAR oval with a length of 2.66-mile-long (4.28 km) tri-oval like the Daytona International Speedway, which is a 2.5-mile-long (4.0 km). At its peak, Talladega had a seating capacity of 175,000 spectators, although its current capacity is 80,000.
Sunday’s race starts at 12 noon local time and the drivers will lap the circuit 188 times that is the equivalent to 500.08 miles.
Past winners are a who’s who in the world of NASCAR racing including Dale Earnhardt who won the 1994 race, and dedicated it to Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, who died earlier that day in a crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.
Earnhardt’s son, Dale Earnhardt Jnr will be defending the trophy and also looking to win the race for a fourth time.
