G Mac Says EurAsia Cup Captaincy A ‘Dry Run’ To Ryder Cup Leadership.

Graeme McDowell has welcomed fellow Irishman Darren Clarke’s decision to captain the European Team in next March’s EurAsia Cup in Malaysia.

McDowell was a member of the team that drew two years ago in the inaugural event in Kuala Lumpur, and while it will provide Clarke with valued captaincy experience ahead of the Ryder Cup later in 2016, McDowell insists it is a good breeding ground for not only for potential European Ryder Cup captains but also players.

And with the four-time Ryder Cup capped McDowell no doubt destined in the future to captain a European Ryder Cup team himself, he sees any captaincy move as beneficial.

“Paul McGinley personified what the Seve Trophies and now the EurAsia Cup can do for a captain, and it’s like a dry run leading to taking over over a Ryder Cup captaincy,” said McDowell.

“You’re dealing basically with the same players, the same procedures but just on a smaller scale compared to a Ryder Cup.

“However there is the worth of communicating with the players assessing the chemistry between certain players and working on possible pairings, and giving guys leadership roles who may not have had that experience in the past.

“So it’s an important grounding for Ryder Cup captains to be undertaking that role and it’s great and I’m glad that Darren will be out in Malaysia, and while it may not be the best team he can assemble it will be so valuable in terms of team assimilation.”
