The 30-year old Inverness-born Knox, who is contesting his 87th PGA Tour event, kick-started his round with birdies at two and three but then after six pars his inward half scores were two pars, birdie, bogey, two birdies, par, bogey and a closing par.

And after being in a similar position last month at Gullane when four from the front with a round to play, Knox is quietly-confident of finally flicking that first victory switch.

He said:   “I am pretty pleased with today’s round as I had a lot of chances and while I hit a couple of poor shots on the back nine, overall I am happy.

“In the bigger picture I am only a few shots off the lead and very excited about tomorrow’s final round.

“I have been knocking on that victory door since being in this same situation since the Scottish Open.

“I feel also like I have done my time waiting and that a really good Sunday is due for me.”

PGA Champion Jason Day and playing partner Korean Bang Sae Moon each birdied the last in scores of 63 to take the clubhouse lead at 11-under par.

Double Masters winner Bubba Watson (67) is in third place at 10-under par.

Reigning Open Champion Zach Johnson bogeyed the last in a score of 67 to be sharing fourth place at nine-under par.

Knox is among 13 players lying within five shots of the lead heading to the last day of the $US 8.25m event.
