Richie Ramsay Declares Whistling Straits ‘A Favourite Venue’.

Making only his second PGA Championship showing is Aberdonian Richie Ramsay who already labeled Whistling Straits ‘one of my favourite venues’.

“I just love the golf course as it suits my eye so much and it’s already become one of my favourite venues even though I’ve only had a couple of practice rounds out on the course,” he said.

“The key here is not to miss the fairways and I am hitting the ball so straight at present it should really suit my game.”

Ramsay is coming off a lot of links golf including being in contention early in the Irish Open at Royal County Down and having contested last fortnight’s Paul Lawrie hosted event at Murcar.

However he is a stranger to Whistling Strait’s ‘all-bunker’ policy where every inch of sand on the manmade links-looking lay-out is to be treated as a bunker, including the now infamous bunker well to the right of the 18th fairway where American Dustin Johnson came unstuck five years ago.

“The smaller bunkers are really tricky and you can get yourself into some funny places but then there are other bunkers out there where the best option could be coming out backwards,” he said.

“Then the bunker Dustin was in five years ago won’t be any concern as it’s too far right off the fairway for me, and besides much of that bunker is covered over by a grandstand (smiling).

“I think even if I aimed over there,  I couldn’t reach it.

“But on a serious note this is where I want to be being among the best fields all year and competing on a really challenging golf course that will demand you playing at your best.

“So it’s going to be real fun, real fun.”
