Michael Hoey’s No Panda Lying Five Shots From BMW Int’ Open Lead.

No sooner had Michael Hoey signed his scorecard of a BMW International Open third round 71 when he was confronted by two young German women seeking a photograph with the five-time Tour winner.

Hoey had ended the day sharing fifth place at 11-under par and just marginally behind England’s James Morrison who dropped a shot at the last in bizarre circumstances in a round of 67 to still lead by two shots at 14-under par.

And Hoey was still singing the praise of a $3,000 ‘custom’ Scotty Cameron putter.

“I first used this Scotty Cameron putter in Austria and it’s still working really well this week,” he said.

“I haven’t really had my game this week but then this putter has kept me in the tournament so I am very happy with that as I have not been hitting the ball that great but then I am still scoring.

“In the old days in those kind of circumstances I would also putt poorly and end the round three or four over par.

“So I have putted a lot better since putting in the bag last fortnight in Austria at the Lyoness Open.

“And now with a round to play I am only a couple of shots behind and having seen James (Morrison) drop a shot there at the last it means I’m among seven players within five of the lead and that is really nothing around this golf course.

“If I get off to a decent start I am sure there is a 66 or a 67 or maybe something lower in the bag.”

And with 11 friends of Hoey, and who were out in La Manga with him last week, having backed the Belfast-born golfer at 150-1, Hoey reckons he’s still a good bet.

“150-1 is very good odds and with James only five in front I am sure there’s a low one in the bag and as a golfer I am not satisfied at all unless you win, and that’s the big goal tomorrow.”
