Richard Green Caps Bizarre & Remarkable Week Winning Victoria Open.

Australia’s Richard Green capped a remarkable week with victory in the 2015 Oates Victoria Open at the Thirteenth Beach Golf Links course.

Green won at the second extra play-off hole from fellow left-handed Nick Cullen.

Green’s victory, and the fifth of his pro career came after he started the week with one of the most bizarre hole-in-one’s, and at a par four hole.

But then that’s only half the tale as Green got engaged earlier in the week to Danish-born Marianne Skarpnord and moving into a new house at Thirteenth Beach, and to add to the fairytale story the three-time winner of the Ladies European Tour captured the corresponding Ladies Oates Vic Open.

Starting the day three shots off the lead, Green, playing in the second last group, fired a 5-under 67 to finish regulation play on 16-under 272.

Green then watched on as Cullen, the Australian Masters champion, birdied the 18th hole to force a playoff.

And Green, who turns 44 on February 19th, then sealed his success with a birdie at the second extra hole.

A three time winner on the European Tour, Green has been a strong supporter of the Vic Open and was proud to finally place his name on the trophy.

“It’s been a long time coming, I have wanted to come back to win and support the tournament and finally after 23 years of trying I have got it finally,” said Green.

“The last few years I have thoroughly enjoyed coming here to play, it’s one of those tournaments that I have wanted on my list, more so than some other around the world, it’s been very important to me.”

It’s been a week of highlights for Green who started by scoring a rare hole-in-one on the par-4 15th during the pro-am.

And then for Skarpnord to win the corresponding Ladies Oates Vic Open was just amazing.

“It’s incredible as I’ve seen what Marianne has been through in the last few months with her game and her wrist injury,” he said.

“I’ve seen an immense amount of work put in by her and I’m very proud of her,” said Green who was on the range preparing for a playoff when Skarpnord sunk her final putt.

“I would have loved to of been there for her but it’s the way it panned out, to be in contention for the men’s tournament, I had to keep warm and fortunately that helped me stay focused to continue in the playoff.”

Skarpnord summed it up best when she said it’s been a fairytale finish.

“It’s almost a dream come true – a fairytale. We got engaged last week, we moved into the house (at Thirteenth Beach) on Monday, Greeny had an albatross on Wednesday and here we are today both winners,” said Skarpnord who is a three time winner on the Ladies European Tour.

Finishing two shots outside of the playoff and tied third on the leaderboard were Scott Arnold and leading amateurs Ryan Ruffels and Ben Eccles.

On 13-under 275 and tied 6th were Adam Bland (SA), Gareth Paddison (NZ), Dimitrios Papadatos (NSW) and Matthew Millar (ACT).

New Zealander Nick Gillespie rounded out the top-10 on 12-under 276.
