Danish Training Ship ‘Georg Stage’ Visits Crail.

There was the spectacular sight last week with the Danish-built training ship Georg Stage visiting Crail.

The 213 tons three mastered ship was launched in 1934 and its home port is Copenhagen.

However the ships visit to Crail caused much interest among residents and visitors alike.

The ship serves as a training-platform for sailors from Denmark and is owned and operated by the independent foundation Georg Stages Minde (in memory of Georg Stage). The foundation was instituted in 1882 by the shipowner Frederik Stage and his wife Thea, recognizing the need for better training and qualification of sailors at their time.

The ship was named after their son, who died from tuberculosis in 1880, aged 22.

It has been retrofitted several times including the installation of a new Volvo Penta main propulsion engine on 368 kilowatts (493 hp) in 2007.

Over a length of 54 m (177 ft), a with of 8.4 m (28 ft) and draft of 4.2 m (14 ft) the ship spawns 20 sails with a total area of 860 m2 (9,300 sq ft), with the tallest mast extending 31 m (102 ft) above deck height.

The figure head is the original from the “old” Georg Stage dating back to 1882 and depicts the young Georg Stage.

Here is a selection of photographs of ship and also moored off Crail.  As well, a snap was taken off the 15th hole at the Balcomie course at the Crail Golfing Society, and the seventh oldest golf club in the world. (This photo taken by ‘thethingsIenjoymost’.
