J B Holmes Fights Back From Brain Surgery Using Carsen Grip To Grab Wells Fargo Victory

J B Holmes has fought back from not one but two bouts of brain surgery and using a Carsen putting grip to grasp victory in the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Despite bogeys at 16 and 18 Holmes produced a final round 71 to win by a shot with a round of 71 for a 14-under par tally.

“This is a big win for me, it’s been since 2008 since I last won, and since then I had two brain surgeries and broke my ankle and had arm surgery, the list goes on,” he said.

“So it’s a huge win and to get top-20 in the FedEx Cup, that’s huge, and just to win on a venue like this with such a good field and the golf course being in such well manicured condition, is just great.

“I’m just ecstatic.”

Holmes collected a first prize cheque for $US 1.242m along with a start in next week’s Players Championship and also a tee time in next year’s Masters.

It was his eighth start in Charlotte but a first since 2012.

However before this year’s Farmers Insurance Open (T23rd) Holmes had not played since fracturing his left ankle on March 9th, 2013 while rollerblading with his wife.

He also missed time in 2011 after having brain surgery in September 2011 to correct structural defects in his cerebellum that had given him vertigo-like symptoms.

And Holmes joked after his Wells Fargo win that he may very well place the piece of his brain that was removed from his skull, and not sits in one of his cupboards back home, in the gleaming trophy.
