Double Major winning Rory McIlroy declared he’s won a first victory of 2014 in announcing his engagement to tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy tweeted the good news:  Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #she said yes!!

Wozniacki responded:  “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! … I said YES!!!! 

The pair made public their intention to get married ahead of New Year’s eve celebrations in Sydney, Austratlia where the Dane will be competing in a warm-up event leading to the Australian Open later this month.  Wozniacki was expecting to be competing in the Brisbane International but was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

McIlroy posted a photo on his Tweeter page was taken from Sydney Harbour and showing fireworks exploding on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Sydney has obviously become a fond city for the pair.  A year ago, McIlroy used a photo of the he and Wozniacki taken atop of Sydney Tower, and the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest building, as his main Tweeter page photograph.  He then returned to Sydney last month to win his first event of 2013 in capturing the Australian Open.

McIlroy and Wozniacki first met at a boxing match in Hamburg and since then have been one of the hottest items in sport.

However there was speculation some months ago that the pair had split.  But that was all dispelled when Wozniacki was present in Dubai when McIlroy competed in the European Tour season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

There is no indication at this stage of a date for the marriage.
