Miguel Angel Jimenez Turns 50 Setting Sight On Being European Ryder Cup Captain.

Miguel Angel Jimenez has arrived in Durban and just a day after his 50th birthday aiming to become Europe’s oldest-ever Ryder Cup captain but also win the appointment as a European Ryder Cup captain.

Jimenez also indicated he will compete in this year’s Senior British Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl while still electing to compete full-time on the main European Tour.

Last month, Jimenez extended his ‘oldest-ever European Tour winner’ record in capturing a third Hong Kong Open title.

He has arrived in Durban for this week’s 2014 season-opening Volvo Champions event and the start of his 26th season on the European Tour.

And the Spaniard’s birthday wish is aiming to earn place later this year in Paul McGinley’s Gleneagles side, and one day leading Europe as captain.

“I think I can do it but I have to go step by step,” he said.

“I would like to be there. I am waiting for news and it would be great if I can.”

The former caddy who now gets about his beloved Malaga driving a Ferrari has played in four Ryder Cups from 1999 to 2010 was vice-captain under fellow Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal in the 2012 victorious ‘Miracle at Medinah’ encounter.

“I feel fine. I have spent 25 years travelling the world and competing and if you aren’t happy doing that then it would be impossible to be so. I am motivated,” he said.

“I am the last of the caddie players.

“Golf has evolved and before it was much more difficult as we had to be caddies.

“We couldn’t play with the children of (club) members and play better than them. I am the last caddie and (Jose Maria) Olazabal is the first amateur player that came from humble roots.”
