The triple Major winner tucked the belly putter into his stomach for a first time in this week’s Wells Fargo Championship but was bundled off the $6.7m cash coach after just two rounds with shock scores of 85 and 75.

It left the Dubliner in an embarrassing share of last place on 11-over par with England’s Greg Owen, and 20 shots behind American Phil Mickelson.

It is Harrington’s worst two round effort since rounds of 73 and 80 for a 13-over par total in the 2007 US Open at Oakmont.

Harrington could manage just three birdies over the two rounds but he then also produced 14 bogeys.

Harrington was making his sixth showing in the event where he was T9th in 2011 and T7th in 2010.

However his effort this year rekindled memories of his debut Quail Hollow appearance in 2005 when he shot weekend scores of 73 and 80 to finish in a tie for 75th place.

However Harrington intends to stick with the controversial club despite being an R & A Ambassador, but with the R & A and USGA expected to ban the anchoring of any club to the body from January 1st, 2016.

And this after he had expressed his displeasure against anchoring a year at Augusta National when he said: “I don’t like the idea of attaching something to myself. It just doesn’t sit well with me.”
