Designers Defend El Encin Greens At Madrid Masters

In an unsual move the Texas-based designers of the El Encin course and host to this week’s Bankia Madrid Masters have written an open lettter defending criticism of the greens.

A number of players including Ryder Cup captain, Jose Maria Olazabal, World No. 1 Luke Donald and triple Ryder Cup winning Paul McGinley agreed the greens were too severe.

The letter from the design team is as follows:

To the attention of Golf Channel & SKY commentators:

We are watching and enjoying immensely, the expert coverage and commentary of the BANKIA MADRID MASTERS on the Golf Channel. And, yes, we’re particularly enjoying the player comments!!

We issued an announcement in advance of the BANKIA MADRID MASTERS, where we predicted the greens would receive “enthusiastic” attention.  It appears we were right!

The design of the putting surfaces and green complexes was quite deliberate and it appears successful:  We have never received this many inquiries and we’ve never experienced this much interest (from international media, clients and contacts) for a European Tour event.

The Bankia Madrid Masters is on the golf world’s radar screen this week.  And, this is largely due to the uniqueness of El Encín – which is generating significant attention.

Are the putting greens at El Encín dramatic?  Absolutely!
Are they maintainable and playable?  Absolutely!
Are they what the TOUR is accustomed to playing?  Absolutely NOT!!

The golf course is visually distinctive and possesses unforgettable play characteristics.  We’re sure it will be a distinctive venue which produces exceptional entertainment; for the players and spectators.  And, it isn’t likely to be confused with any other venue. What could be better than this?

We’re hopeful the range and potential of the golf course is understood, exploited and celebrated!

One of Mr. von Hagge’s quotes seems fitting in this context:

“We know we have succeeded in our design if we elicit a fervent, borderline fanatical reaction – good or bad. (He considered them equally encouraging.)    Nothing could be more disappointing, and we have certainly failed infamously if we receive dispassionate commentary, when we showcase a new golf course.  It is undoubtedly tantamount to kissing your sister.”

We’re looking forward to the remainder of the BANKIA MADRID MASTERS. It’s going to be exciting – maybe even because of the greens!!! El Encín is definitely something new under the Spanish sun!!

We sincerely appreciate your commentary and the excellent coverage of your entire team.

Kindest regards,
