Newly-married Gareth Maybin grabbed his first-ever Tour ace when he holed out late in his opening round on day two of the rain-affected KLM Open.
Maybin had a 136-metres to the flag at the par three, fifth hole that he was playing as his 15th, and hit a ‘soft’ 9-iron that took one bounce and disappeared into the cup.
The Ballyclare player then tossed his ball to a happy spectator.
Maybin eventually signed for a one-under par 69 and had just under an hour before heading into this second round on the softened Hilversum course.
There was no prize for Maybin’s hole-in-one other than the honour on the next tee.
However Tournament Director, Miguel Vidador did present Maybin with a bottle of Moet that he’s taking home to share with new wife, Liz.
“It’s my first hole-in-one on the Tour and the third I’ve had in my career,” he said.
“I actually had one a couple of weeks ago in a ‘Save our Soldiers’ charity day at Bangor but to date, I haven’t won a car or anything like that.
“But then it was nice of Miguel to present me with a bottle of bubbly.”
