The opening round of the 2012 Open Championship wound up 14 1/2 hours after the first tee off with Thailand’s Prayad Marksaeng holing out on the 18th green at 8.55pm local time. Open Championship Courses At ‘Maximum Length’ Says R & A Peter Dawson

The rota of courses playing host to the Open Championship are close to ‘their maximum length’ according to R & A CEO Peter Dawson. This year’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Annes will play 181 yards longer than when American David Duval won the 2001 Open when last staged at the Lancashire county course. Graeme McDowell confessed his high hopes of adding a Masters to his U.S. Open success have fallen flat. McDowell will head to the final round at two over par and 11 strokes behind 2010 Ryder Cup winning team mate, Peter Hanson of Sweden, with scores of 75, 72 and a third day 71.
