So Much For ‘Massacre 3’ As JT Shoots Lowest Winged Foot U.S. Open Score In 91-Years.
So much for talk of a ‘Massacre 3’ at this year’s U.S. Open at Winged Foot.
World No. 3 Justin Thomas first round five-under par 65 is the lowest round ever in a U.S. Open at the famed Long Island club.
And as the aftenoon half of the first round draw took to the course there was another seven players under par on day one of the 120th staging of the U.S. Open.
Legendary amateur Bobby Jones held the record of a three-under par in the 1929 U.S. Open and the first hosting at Winged Foot.

McDowell Shoots Six-Over But Does Not Blame Winged Foot ‘In Any Shape Or Form’.
Graeme McDowell found himself introduced on the first tee as the 2010 U.S. Open winner but then 14 years on it proved a real roller-coaster return to Winged Foot for the Irishman in posting a six-over par 76.
McDowell, and among some 15 to have teed-up in the 2006 U.S. Open, produced a round that was five shots more than his 71 on day one of the 14-years ago at Winged Foot.
He was virtually playing catch-up in doubling the fourth hole and while he got back to one-over at the turn, McDowell then dropped ...
McIlroy Takes A 67 But A Lower US Open Score Flies The Coop At Winged Foot.
Rory McIlroy muscled his way straight into contention with a 67 but again it was a round that could have ‘been’ on day one of the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.
McIlroy was in the opulent clubhouse at lunch two shots behind fellow PGA champion, Justin Thomas who grabbed six birdies in a five-under par 65 in the cool morning and benign conditions on New York’s Long Island.
Patrick Reed, and with only a second hole-in-one in his career, posted a 66 to be in second place at four-under par.
McIlroy’s ...
MacIntyre Guarantees $10,500 For Neese University After Tough Winged Foot Start.
Robert MacIntyre had the joy of raising $10,500 for his former university in hurricane hit Louisiana but it was the damage of a four-over par 74 that really hurt the Scot on day one of his first U.S.Open at Winged Foot.
MacIntyre managed three $US 3,500 apiece birdies for McNeese University but it was the sting of five bogeys and an early round double-bogey that dented the Oban golfer’s Long Island showing.
There was no splitting MacIntyre and fellow Scot and former amateur playing partner Sandy ...
Nine Aussies Chasing The Gleaming U.S. Open Trophy.
One of the first things I did after Geoff Ogilvy captured the 2006 U.S. Open was to sprint down to the Winged Foot merchandise tent and purchase a handfull of commemorative 18th hole flags.
In the weeks following, Geoff very kindly signed the flags and in returning home to Australia later that year I presented three of them to good friends, handed one to the local professional at Bathurst Golf Club and I still have two in my possession.
Seven years later, I felt so proud in getting to shake Adam ...
Scots MacIntyre & Scott Reunite For Dream Winged Foot Tee Times.
In a dream U.S. Open debut Scots Robert MacIntyre and Sandy Scott will be reunited for the first time in four years for the opening two rounds at Winged Foot on New York’s Long Island
The pair were team-mates, and both as amateurs, when the six-man Scotland side successfully defended the 2016 European Team Championship in France.
Now they’re playing partners in the opening two rounds of the U.S. Open teeing-up later today (THURS) at 1.40pm (UK time) Thursday and then tomorrow (FRD) 7pm ...
Sugrue’s 15-Month U.S. Open Wait Is Over.
It’s fair to say no one has given up more this year in terms of missing tournaments than reigning British Amateur champ, James Sugrue.
The 23-year old Mallow golfer has waited 15 months for his opportunity to tee-up later today (THUR) in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.
Sugrue qualified for the 120th hosting of the U.S. Open championship winning last year’s British Amateur at Portmarnock.
Victory earned him a place a few weeks later in last year’s Open Championship along with a tee-time in this ...
