Double Major winning Rory McIlroy came up short on the opening of the Shell Houston Open needing 31 putts in a round of a two under par 70.
It left next week’s Masters favourite trailing five shots behind the leading American-born duo of Charlie Hoffman and Bill Haas who were also out in the afternoon half of the draw in posting seven under par 65s in overcast and sometimes drizzling rain conditions.

Padraig Harrington strongly insisted he is not prepared to travel to Augusta for next Wednesday’s Par Three Contest unless he captures this week’s Shell Houston Open.
Harrington kept alive hopes of extending an unbroken 14-year Masters appearance with a three under par 69 in overcast conditions on day one of the $US 6.2m event in Texas.

Three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson has downgraded his injury concern from ‘painful’ to just ‘sore’ after posting an encouraging 68 on the opening day of the Shell Houston Open.
Mickelson has returned to competition after an oblique muscle injury in his back forced him out mid-way through the third round of last week’s Valero Texas Open.
And Mickelson arrived in Houston after playing 27 holes Tuesday and Wednesday at Augusta.

Padraig Harrington boosted hopes of securing the final Masters invitation with a 69 on the opening day of the Shell Houston Open.
The $US 6.2m event is a ‘Last Chance Saloon’ for Harrington and another 45 players, including the Dubliner’s playing partners Ryo Ishikawa and Ryder Cup star Nicolas Colsaerts, in the 144-player Houston field.
Harrington has competed in every Masters since his debut in 2000 but has run out of exemptions while he’s tumbled to 164th on the World Rankings.

The Irish Open is certainly taking to the road with the European Tour announcing today the 2015 event will be staged at Royal Country Down while the 2017 event will also be in Northern Ireland at the Loch Erne Resort course.
The European Tour today confirmed that the Irish Open will return to Northern Ireland in 2015 and 2017, with Royal County Down Golf Club hosting next year’s event from May 28-31, 2015, followed by Lough Erne Resort in three years’ time.
