China’s Haotong Li fell foul of the new Rules of Golf and with his subsequent two-stroke penalty on the final hole in the last round of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic costing the China golfer a share of third place and some Euro 100,000 in prize-money.
Li was preparing for his birdie putt on the 18th green at the Emirates Club when his caddie was seen standing behind him as he was taking his stance.
The World No. 43 holed the putt, but European Tour officials decided that he had violated the new rule so he had to put himself down for a bogey 6 on the hole.
Instead of finishing T-3, the defending champion fell to T-12, costing him roughly €100,000.
And while Li is believed to be the first to fall foul of these news Rules he probably will not be the last.
