Torrey Pines, California …
Rory McIlroy tees-up for a first time in his career at the Farmers Insurance Open declaring give him time and he’ll figure out how to add to current four Majors victory haul.
McIlroy has also returned to the Torrey Pines course also for a first occasion since he was a 10-year old when he attended the opening ceremony for the Junior World Championship but with the event itself taking place in nearby San Diego.
The now World No. 8 recalls managing an ace on a par-2 course at the Presido Country Club and also getting a photograph with Earl Woods, and the late father to Tiger Woods.
McIlroy got his first look at this week’s venue in playing nine holes of the South Course on Monday, a full 18 over the North Course on Tuesday and 18 holes in a five-hour Pro-Am on the South Course yesterday (WED).

And ahead of teeing-up at 8.30pm (UK time) later tonight in the company of Ryder Cup rivals Rickie Fowler and Tony Finua, the 29-yea rold McIlroy was asked, and given he’s put in himself in position so often, if he felt he was running out of time and with his fourth and last Major championship victory being the 2014 PGA Championship.
“You look at the players I am trying to get to their level and you look at the likes of Faldo, Seve and you look at Phil (Mickelson) as Phil has won more Majors than me and he didn’t win his first one till he was in his 30s,” said McIlroy.
“I’ve had success early but sometimes it just takes a little time to figure it out.
“Once Phil got his first Major in ’04 he won five pretty … from ’04 to ’13 it was a still a nine-year period.
“I am not trying to compare myself to someone like Jack (Nicklaus) as Jack also had a couple of three-year spells when he didn’t win a Major.
“I know Tiger has had his difficulties with injury and it’s a 11-years since Tiger won the U.S. Open here at Torrey in ’08, so I don’t feel like … Yes, four years is four years and that is 16 opportunities that has passed me by.
“At the same time, I am giving myself chances. I have chances at Augusta last year. I had a chance at Carnoustie and that is all I can ask of myself to keep giving myself those chances and sooner or later I will figure out how to get the job done.”
