Akron, Ohio …
Russell Knox is quietly condfident there is a low score in his bag heading to the final round of the final WGC – Bridgestone Invitational.
Knox never managed to fully recover from a third hole double bogey in eventually posting a three-over par 73 and drop back to level par in the $10m event.
It left him trailing 11 shots behind American Justin Thomas who signed for a 67 to lead the field by three shots on 14-under par into the closing 18 holes of the $10m tournament.
The Jacksonville-based Knox found the right rough with his drive and in being blocked out by a tree he was forced to chip back to the fairway and then took four shots from 84-yards out, and over water guarding the green, in taking a ‘6’.
The Scot did win back both shots with back-to-back birdies on five and six but then handed them back with bogeys on nine, 16 and 17.
He said: “I didn’t that bad but it’s the nature of this course where it can jump up and bite you as it did on three in making a sloppy double.
“I battled away with a few birdies but now with a round to play I am sure there’s a low one in the bag I can take to the PGA Championship.
“I had last week off after The Open and did come feeling a bit rusty but I feel much better over the ball today.”
