Jim Furyk Creates PGA History Shooting 58 Says “It Was Fun To Be First To Break 59 Barrier” (Video).

American Jim Furyk created PGA Tour with the 46-year-old golfer shooting the first-ever round of 58 and on the final day of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Six players enjoyed a share of the record of having shot 59 since Al Geiberger shot the first 59 in the 1977 Memphis Classic.

And Furyk, with his 12-under par 58 on the par 70 TPC River Highlands course, was also the last in posting a 59 in the 2013 BMW Championship.

Now the veteran American has become the first player in the 86-year history of the PGA Tour to shoot a 58.

And Furyk’s round on the par 70 TPC Riverlands course could have been a 57 as his putt lipped out on the 15th.

All up, Furyk’s round included 10 birdies, one eagle, and seven pars.

“Having had the opportunity to shoot a 59 and managing to accomplish that goal I thought I’ve had my one chance when I birdied the last hole so that will probably never happen again but low and behold then I made the turn today and I said to myself here we go again”, he said.

“So it was fun to break that barrier and be the first one to shoot a 58.

“Fluff and I were aware where we were at and I know I turned at eight under par and to out and birdie 10 and then birdie 11, 12 and then it becomes a mental struggle.

“So this is pretty cool and winning a Major Championship is top of my list while playing and winning on Ryder Cup teams, and President Cup teams, and winning golf tournaments but then to shoot a 58 is very special and I don’t think it has sunk in yet as it’s been kind of whirlwind since I finished-up my round.

“CBS Sports said there’s probably been a million-and-a-half rounds played on the PGA Tour and you look at the great names ahead of me and it is humbling to stand alone having shot a 58 and it’s a cool accomplishment.”

While Furyk created history on the PGA Tour he’s not the only player to shoot a 58.

In 2010, Japan’s Ryo Ishikawa shot a 58 – 12 birdies and no bogeys – to win The Crowns tournament on the Japan Tour while only last week Germany’s Stefan Jager shot a 58 on his way to winning the Ellie Mae Classic on the secondary Web.Com Tour.

However there has been not one sub-60 round on the European Tour since the inception of the Tour in 1972.

Here is the list of played to have recorded 59s including Furyk who was the last in 2013.
