England’s Simon Dyson cleaned up to win a drama charged final round of the Irish Open at Killarney.
The blond-haired Dyson snatched two birdies over his final three holes in a closing four under par 67 to deny Australia’s hapless Richard Green.
Dyson posted a four round 15-under par tally and then waited to see what Green would do.
However the left-handed Melbourne player bogeyed the last to finish a stroke behind Dyson on 14-under par.
Last October Green also bogeyed the final hole at the Victoria club in Villamoura that was still good enough to capture the Portugal Masters.
But not on this occasion in front of record Irish crowds.
Green had drawn level with Dyson after a 16th hole birdie but a final hole bogey from Green handed Dyson his fifth Tour success.
“It’s amazing as I was just so focused all day and I never really gave winning a thought,” said Dyson.
“Hitting the two shots on the last that I did I couldn’t have played it any better, it’s just a shame the putt didn’t go in.
“Ireland’s always been one of my favourite places to come to but I’ve never really done any good in the tournaments so I’m glad to put that to bed.”
I’m one of these people that needs to look at the scoreboard and know what I have to do, we were just trading blows all day.
“But in saying that the golf I’ve played this week is probably the best golf I’ve ever played, I’ve been working on some good things with Pete Cowan during the British Open week and I just brought it to here.
“I played three and three quarter near perfect rounds on this course so I was just thinking if I keep swinging it well then I’ll give myself chances of birdies.
“While I am delighted to win I do feel sorry for Richard as I would have much more preferred to have won it with a birdie but I’ll take whatever I can get.”
Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher grabbed his best finish of the season with a birdie at the last to finish third at 12-under par and one clear of Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, while overnight leader David Howell slipped back into a tie for eighth.
Big disappointment was the effort of U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy who finished mid field with weekend rounds of 72 and 71.
