Immelman Goes 18 Holes With World Heavyweight Champion

It was like he had just been 18 rounds with the world heavyweight champion.

That’s how former Masters champion, Trevor Immelman described his third round of the 140th British Open.

Immelman posted a second straight two-over par 72 for a four-over par tally in some of teh worst conditions ever experienced in The Open.

Included in the South African’s round was back-to-back bogeys to commence his round before birdies at seven and nine.

The 31-year old, who captured 2008 Masters, then dropped shots at the 11th and 13th holes for his two over par round.

“It was like going 18 holes with the heavyweight champion of the world,” said Immelman.

“It was just so tough on every hole.

“This course is tough enough on a perfect day let alone to also have to face these conditions.  They could easily be the worse conditions I’ve ever played in.

“You just have to be tough and you just have to hang in there, and grind it out on every shot.

“All I was trying to do was to stay dry out there, and keep my hands dry.

“But around the 12th, 13th and 14th holes I was really struggling with that.

“We were actually going through a glove a hole at that point.  We also went through about five or six towels.”

This year marks Immelman’s eighth Open Championship since making his debut while he had to miss the 2009 event due to a wrist injury.
