Brazil 2016 Olympics – Golf Venue Named

The R  & A today announced the golfing venue for the 2016 summer Olympics.

Peter Dawson, R & A CEO annoucned the Riserva Uno site in Rio de Janeiro to be the return of golf to Olympic comeback in Brazil in 2016.

It will be the first time since 1904 when the American city of St. Louis

“Within the last three weeks or so the Rio organising committee and the city of Rio confirmed that Riserva Uno … will be the site,” said Dawson on the eve of the 140th Open Championship.

“It is a site close to the Olympic village and quite close to the sea in the Barra area of Rio. A course will be designed by an architect yet to be determined.

“In order to be in time we need to get the architect appointed, his designs approved and start breaking ground in 2012 in order to make the timetable for a 2015 test event.”

“The format remains as per the Olympic bid for golf which was 60 men in one competition, 60 women in another, 72-hole strokeplay.”

Dawson also revealed a team event also has to be added to golf’s 2016 Olympic schedule and that he will be attending next year’s 2012 Olympics to discuss matters relating to golf’s return to sports greatest spectacle.
