Peter Lawrie and Damien McGrane have led tributes to J D Murphy, the father of good friend and former Tour colleague Gary Murphy who died suddenly on Wednesday night.  (FYI – Brain haemorrhage)

Lawrie was pleased to have muscled his way into a share of sixth place on six under par on day one of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic but then revealing his sadness in learning the news prior to tee off in the UAE. 

Gary Murphy – Ireland golf mourns the passing of his father.

“I am pleased to shoot a 66 but today also is a very sad day as one of my very good friends, Gary Murphy’s father passed away last night,” said Lawrie.

“I only found out this morning but then we grew up with Gary and his father was only in his early 60s that makes even more sad.”

And Damien McGrane, who posted a four under par 68, said:  “J D was a lovely fellow and just a genuine nice guy.

“The Irish lads all got to know Gary’s father really well and we now all extend our deepest sympathy and our thoughts to Gary and his family at this sad time.”
