After forfeiting the opportunity to contest this week’s U.S. Open, Richie Ramsay is hoping to celebrate his birthday Wednesday with a late Congressional call-up.
The Scottish golfer will head from Sunday’s concluding BMW Italian Open in Turin to London and onto his Atlanta home when really he could easily have been jetting his way to Washington D.C. and this week’s U.S. Open.
The Aberdonian has since got over the blunder of leaving Walton Heath last Monday week when instead he could have been in a three-man play-off.
As it stands, Ramsay is now first alternate for the season’s second Major and it means either one of the 12 players that qualified at Walton Heath, including fellow Scot Stephen Gallacher, would have to withdraw for Ramsay to be contesting the U.S. Open.
So Ramsay will be hanging on a phone call from the USGA.
“It’s my 28th birthday on Wednesday and I’ll be waiting beside the phone, and if I get a call from the USGA that will be my birthday present,” he said.
”If I do I can jump on a flight out of Atlanta and be up there in no time.”
Ramsay was speaking after posting a three-under par 69 to move to 11-under par in the rain-affected event.
England’s Robert Rock (68) extended his lead to two shots and moved to 16-under par as he seeks to end a 209 event winless drought.
Rock has been second three times including losing a play-off to then amateur Shane Lowry at the 2009 Irish Open.
