Maybin Forgoes U.S. Open Qualifier To Tie The Knot

Star Northern Ireland golfer Gareth Maybin if forgoing the chance to qualify for the U.S. Open and marry long-time girlfriend, Liz McMekin.

The couple will tie the knot at 3pm in Belfast.

Gareth Maybin all set to take to the plunge into marriage

This time last year Maybin came through a 36-hole qualifier at Walton Heath to qualify for the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.

And while fellow Ulsterman Graeme McDowell was celebrating becoming the first European in 30-years to capture the U.S. Open, Maybin was equally thrilled as he used the occasion to propose to McMekin.

Maybin had intended to get down on one knee on a holiday he had planned for both in September at San Francisco.

But qualifying for just his second Major Championship brought forward the proposal.

Maybin completed his four rounds of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a closing hole birdie for a round of 73 but a disappointing 16-over par tally that left him near the tail of the field.

And as he headed off to the clubhouse, Maybin was asked if he was nervous ahead of his wedding.

“No, not a bit but then Liz is getting very nervous,” he said.

Helping celebrate their wedding will be fellow Ulster golfer, Michael Hoey and winner of last fortnight’s Madeira Islands Open, as well as Maybin’s caddy, Darren Reynolds.

Also attending but arriving late will be former U.S. Amateur champ and South African Open winner, Richie Ramsay of Scotland.

Ramsay is contesting Monday’s U.S. Open qualifier at Walton Heath in Surrey and looking to join Martin Laird, who is currently the only Scot competing at Congressional.
