Lawrie Buries Brookline Memories In Despatching PGA Tour’s $11.4m Man To Lost Parcels Office.

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie buried memories of his Brookline disappointment with a magical Medinah Singles display and in the process despatching the the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup $11.4m man to the lost parcels office.

The oldest player competing in Chicago sent the FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker packing with the biggest victory on the final day of the 39th Ryder Cup.

The greying 43-year old Lawrie handed the golden-haired Snedeker a 5 & 3 thumping to help deliver Europe a stunning victory.

Strangely, Lawrie had been in a similar situation at the USA Team 13-years ago at Brookline leading 10 to 6 heading to the Sunday Singles.

However in 1999 an ugly American crowd helped turn the tables and produce 8 1/2 points and come from behind to defeat Europe by the same 14 1/2 to 13 1/2 point margin as we saw in Medinah.

Lawrie was out in the last match at Brookline and despite defeating Jeff Maggert 4 & 3 the Scot had to endure the sour taste of defeat.

However that all changed on Sunday with the proud Aberdonian delivering Snedeker the shock of a 5 & 3 defeat.

“Obviously this now feels a lot better than ’99 felt,” said Lawrie.

“That was pretty tough.  We were 10‑6 ahead in Brookline, and obviously the American Team played fantastic in the singles and deservedly won.

“But today, you know, especially at my age, to be part of this team and to come back from 10‑6 behind on American soil, doesn’t get any better.”

And helping inspire Lawrie and his Medinah teammates was the inspiration of their European captain.

“Everyone in that team room last night wanted to win the Ryder Cup for Ollie,” said Lawrie.

“Given the career he’s had and knowing what the Ryder Cup means to him, and for him to be a losing Ryder Cup captain would have killed everyone one of us this week.”
