Sweden’s Anders Forsbrand became the first Swedish born player to win on the European Seniors Tour in capturing the SSE Scottish Senior Open at St. Andrews Bay.
Forsbrand, 51 posted a final round 67 to win by a stroke on 17-under par.
Engand’s Philip Golding, with Kevin ‘Woody’ Woodward on the bag, finished second courtesy of a second straight 64 for a 16-under par tally, and in only his second Seniors Tour event.
NB – Woody has been a house guest all week at the McGuire Mansion in nearby Crail, so our gratulations to him.
Forsbrand’s win is his first in 17 years since capturing the 1985 German Masters on the main European Tour and also his second in Scotland after teaming with fellow Swede’s Per-Ulrik Johansson and Mats Lanner to win the Dunhill Cup on the Old Course at St. Andrews.
“I am really pleased to win because Philip played incredible golf over the last two days, shooting two 64s, but the fact I came through to win is wonderful,” said Forsbrand.
“I started the last round leading by three and while I birdied three, four and five I missed a putt for bogey at 16 and that made it a bit more interesting.
“But to win again in Scotland after winning the Dunhill Cup back in ’91 is good.
“Also this is my first individual win in the U.K. and to be the first Swede to win on the Seniors Tour is also something special.”
Forsbrand now heads to Gleneagles and Thursday’s starting Johnnie Walker Championship but not teeing up in the final Ryder Cup qualifying event on the PGA Centennary course.
No, Forsbrand is currently the Austrian National coach and will be working with the talented duo of Martin Wiegele and in-form Bernd Wiesburger.
Wiesburger has won twice on this year’s Race to Dubai while he’s currently lying 21st on the money list.
