While Sergio Garcia looks set to end a four-year PGA Tour winless drought the Ryder Cup ‘wildcard’ decision process for European captain, Jose Maria Olazabal only deepens.
Garcia heads into the into the final round of the Wyndham Championship leading by a stroke on 14-under par after posting a third day 66.
The 32-year old Garcia has not tasted success in the States since capturing the prestigious 2008 Players Championship.

His sixth victory at TPC Sawgrass was pivotal in Garcia automatically qualifying for the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla.
Garcia will tee-up later today in North Carolina lying 11th on the European Ryder Cup points table and should he win the five-time Ryder Cup start would move inside the top-10 automatic qualifiers and bump England’s Ian Poulter out of the 10, and just a week after Poulter muscled his way into the top-10.
In fact, Garcia has only to finish top-three to break into the automatic qualifiers.
“Winning is great and winning means a lot no matter what,” said Garcia.
“Obviously putting myself in a situation to win is already a good achievement but winning, no matter what it is, it’s great.
“But winning is never easy. It doesn’t matter if it’s Asian Tour, South African Tour, European Tour. I mean the Tour wins last year in Europe meant to me, meant as much or even more than the ones I’ve had here. So, at the end of the day, the most important thing, the importance I have give to the victories, not anybody else.”
While Garcia is focussed solely on winning in Greensboro, Olazabal will be studying the points table wondering who he’ll choose tomorrow week (Monday, August 27th) as his two wildcard picks.
What is simple is that if either Garia or Poulter don’t finish inside the top-10 they can be assured of a ‘wildcard’ pick.
The biggest question remaining is who will get the second pick?
Will Olazabal choose Belguim’s big-hitting Nicolas Colsaerts or stick his neck out and pick triple Major winning, Padraig Harrington.
Harrington is currently ranked a lowly 19th on the points table and as Olazabal mentioned last week at the PGA Chmpionship, is going to need an ‘extraordinary’ showing in this week’s Barclays Championship to qualify automatically.
Those on the table between Garcia and Colsaerts in a respective 11th and 12th place, and Harrington at 19th, include David Lynn (13th), Rafal Cabrera-Bello (14th), Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (15th), Thomas Bjorn (16th), Marcel Siem (17th) and Simon Dyson (18th).
www.golfbytourmiss.com is predicting Garcia to break back inside the top-10 and with Olazabal to pick Poulter and Colsaerts.
If so, Colsearts to be the only rookie heading to Medinah.
