American Brooke Pancake is heading to the pro ranks in the best possible form having flattened Ireland’s Leona Maguire into hopeless submission winning their final Singles match in easy fashion.
Apart from winning the sixth hole, Maguire never got out of first gear and in the process also losing the par five 10th hole with a triple bogey ‘8’ to Pancake’s ‘7’.
The bashful Slieve Russell attached Maguire was sent out as team anchor but was hopelessly all at sea losing 6 & 5.
Maguire halved the first, lost the second, lost the fourth and fifth holes and after winning the sixth then lost the eighth, ninth, 10th before conceeded defeat at the 12th hole.
Maguire returns home with a terrible record in the team event having now played 10 Curtis Cup matches but managing just three points.
It was fellow Irishwoman Stephanie Meadow who proved the hero of the 37th Curtis Cup in winning her match that sealed victory for GB & I.
In the end, GB & I won 10 1/2 points to 9 1/2 points and it now means GB & I and Europe now hold the four major mens and womens plus amateur and pro team trophies in golf – Curtis Cup, Walker Cup, Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup.
It also is only the second occasion in 25 Singles the USA team has been beaten on the final day.
But even with success, USA has still won 28 matches in 37 encounters.
While the 2014 Curtis Cup will head back to the States there is good news for Ireland with the country to host the 2016 Curtis Cup at Dun Laoghaire.
It will be only the second occasion Ireland will host the Curtis Cup.
