Pat Cornett, the USA Curtis Captain, will resume her duties on Saturday despite breaking her ankle in a bizarre buggy incident on day one of competition at Nairn.

Cornett was being driven in a motorised buggy down the first hole when it’s believed her leg caught the edge of a grandstand on the Nairn Golf Club course.

The 56-year old Professor of Medicine was out supporting the afternoon Fourball matches on day one of the 37th staging of the Curtis Cup.

Cornett was temporarily replaced as USA captain, Carole Semple Thompson, a former 12-time Curtis Cup competitor and who played on eight winning USA sides.

Semple Thompson then witnessed the USA team win the opening Fourball match to go 4 up in the event before losing the remaining two matches.

The USA team will head to round two leading four points to two and with Cornett, despite being on crutches and with her leg in plaster, resuming her role.

“In all my years of playing golf it is the most bizarre thing I can recall happening but the main thing is that Pat is fine and in good spirits, so we all look forward to her returning to the event,” said Semple Thompson.
