Askernish Acclaims New Champion – Tour Miss Presents Trophy.

Tour Miss was on hand at the Askernish Golf Club on Sunday when asked to present the splendid Angus Glen Trophy to South Uist’s Robert Patrick.

It was a glorious day in April when the members gathered around noon to tee up on the much-acclaimed Old Tom Morris designed course.

Leading out the gathering was renowned ‘King’ Ralph Thompson, 2010 Askernish Handicap Stroke-Play Champion, who arranged for Crail Golf Society members, George Morris and myself (Bernie McGuire) to accompany him.

George, playing off a handicap of eight and out on the course for a second straight day, began superbly in birding the first before eventually carding a round of 82 for a net 75.

Robert Patrick hodling the splendid Angus Glen Tropy and surrounded by Askernish members, Tour members, three inquisitve dogs and George Morris (far right) – Bernie, using his European Tour experienced, organised the chair

Bernie, taking a break from reporting the European Tour for the Scotland Daily Record, struggled initially before ending in chipping in for a birdie at the par-three, 17th, and then paring the last for an overall net score of 82.

However, all credit to Robert who had spent five years studying at St. Andrews University where he honed his golfing skills at the famed ‘Home of Golf’.

Playing off a handicap of 11, Robert won with a net score of 69.

Tour Miss had been in the clubhouse conducting putting lessons for the members ahead of handing the stunning ‘Claret Jug’ replica to Robert, and before he donned his helmet and then proudly headed down the road on his motorbike.  It’s what you do in this part of the world!

What a fantastic introduction to the first of hopefully a few visits to Askernish.

A very special thanks to Club Captain, Paddy Forbes, and Ralph Thompson for their extremely warm welcome and then also for being able to spend a great time after the round with all the Askernish members to enjoy all that is good about the ancient game.

Askernish is one of those links golfing gems but it’s the members who are the shining light.

MEANTIME —

Fast forward to April, 2022 and I am updating this page ahead of the third round of The Masters.

Since that first visit in June 2012, I’ve had the great pleasure of returning in July 2015, June 2016, and more recently in June 2019, and have enjoyed the experience more on each visit

Please do read the following articles on our past visit to Askernish.
