The Scottish duo of Ewen Ferguson and David Law superbly honoured the 15th anniversary of the passing of legendary Seve Ballesteros each posting seven-under 65s to be tied second on the opening day of the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship on the host El Prat course in Barcelona.
The Scots share second with Frenchman Alex Levy and trailing just a stroke shy of South African Shaun Norris leading at eight-under
Ferguson continues to knock loudly on a fourth victory door, capping his effort with an eagle and six birdies while Law, who turned 34 on Monday, grabbed seven birdies, including an opening pair and then three in succession from his eighth hole.
The three-time Tour winning Ferguson is coming off a super fourth place finish in last week’s Turkish Airlines Open and also having shared sixth place earlier this year at the Hero Indian Open and a T9th at the Investec South African Open.

Ferguson said: “I saw there was some low scores before I started and I was kind of surprised a bit to be honest because in the practice round the course felt pretty difficult.
“I just got on a nice roll, obviously made an eagle on nine which kind of relaxed me and I played the back nine knowing I had stolen a couple shots in the round, so that is always a nice feeling when it goes your way“.
The opening day of the Spanish event so sadly marked the 15th anniversary of the passing of then aged 54 Ballesteros on 7th May, 2011.
It was honoured by the majority in the field donned in a white shirt and navy colored trousers, the same colored attire Seve wore in capturing the 1984 Open Championship at St. Andrews.
Ferguson said: “Seve’s career and presence was massive for the European Tour. He changed the game for the support of the European Tour, and he’s one of the reasons why we are still playing here today and for as much money as we are.
“There is also Seve’s legacy in terms of the Ryder Cup. I have been good enough to play the team cup, while I’ve heard some incredible stories on Seve from the likes of Olazabal, Ken Brown and so many others who knew Seve so well.
“It’s been nice this week to see Seve’s son around and pictures of Seve all about the golf course“.
Law had celebrated his 20th birthday back in 2011 and three days prior to Seve passing away. The Scot was still also eight years away from breaking full-time onto the DP World Tour.
The Aberdonian golfer’s opening day Barcelona effort also was a welcome return to return after missing the cut last week in Turkey.
Law said: “It was a score I was really pleased with. There was a bit of wind out there that made it a bit tricky, and the greens are also a bit spinny, as well.
“Coming off last week in Turkey, I didn’t play that great but I got home for a couple of days which was nice.
“I spoke to my coach and we worked on a few things, and it just felt really comfortable out there today, to be really honest.
“What Seve has done for our Tour and the Ryder Cup, he is a very special player for the Spanish players and for all of us. It was a very nice touch today with everyone wearing navy and white, and it gave the tournament a nice atmosphere on an opening day.”
OTHER SCOTS…
Scott Jamieson 71, Richie Ramsay and Daniel Young 72, Euan Walker 76 and Grant Forrest 79.
