The 15th anniversary of the passing of Severiano Ballesteros, one of golf’s most celebrated and influential figures, will be marked on May 7th and the opening day of the DP World Tour’s Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship in Barcelona.
Players from around the world also with many current leading Spanish stars including – Pablo Larrazabal, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and Jorge Campillo – have been invited to honour Seve on the opening day of the tournament by wearing clothing inspired by his look: navy trousers, a white polo and a navy sweater – a combination synonymous with his victory at the 1984 Open Championship at St Andrews.
Somewhat bizarrely news of Seve’s passing on May 7, 2011 was early in the week of the Spanish Open also at the famed El Prat course and with that year also marking the 30th anniversary of Seve’s first Spanish Open success on the older El Prat course while the 1995 Spanish Open was the last of his 50 European Tour victories.
The Seve brand’s collection was conceived as a quiet tribute to Seve’s approach to golf clothing; understated in its elegance, confident in its colour and rooted in the era when the European game found its identity on the world stage. The range draws directly from the palette and cut that Seve made his own during the years he captivated galleries around the world, from Augusta to St Andrews, Royal Lytham & St Annes and beyond.
“My father never followed trends; he trusted his instinct, in his game and in his style,” said Javier Ballesteros. “What he wore was an extension of who he was. It’s special to see that spirit still resonate today in a way that feels true to him and to remember him with this fitting tribute.”
Seve Collection will observe the anniversary, acknowledging that fifteen years on, the man and his style continue to resonate, and that for those who loved watching him play, some things are worth remembering properly.
Seve Collection is available at www.sevecollection.com, where the story behind each piece is told.
