Rookie Scot South African Open Bound With Spring In His Step

Scottish-born Tour rookie Cameron Adam has a real spring in his step heading to this week’s prestigious South African Open.

A 72nd hole birdie in a closing round of 66 earned the 22-year-old Edinburgh lefty a share of ninth in the Magical Kenya Open in Nairobi.

South African Casey Jarvis sensationally eagled the last to claim a maiden DP World Tour win and the fifth of his own pro career, signing for a stunning 62 and to win by three shots at 25-under-under on the host Karen course.

“It’s amazing, I’ve actually never won in front of my dad before, I’ve wanted to win in front of him so badly, and to finally do it when he’s here, I can’t explain to you the emotions.

“I was so nervous coming down the last two so yeah, it feels great.

“There’s not many words that can describe the feeling, I also wish my mum was here but she’s back home in the UK. But it’s unbelievable, he’s been with me through the ups, through the downs.

Adam’s effort is the Royal Burgess golfer’s maiden top-10 effort in his five events this year as a full Tour player and also lifted him to 80th on the Race to Dubai money list while the £stg 38,000 prize cheque, and the biggest in his short pro career, will no doubt help pay for growing travel expenses.

Adam had hinted before leaving home and bound for the African continent that  ‘something special’ may happen’ and it did.

First it was his great second round 63, a lowest by three shots since joining the Tour and while a day three saw Adam drop to T12th, his super closing round of a four-under 66, that included birdies at 16 and 18, was the cherry on the cake in sharing ninth at 16-under.

Adam was even more delighted knowing his top-10 effort had been rewarded with a place in this week’s Investec South African Open being staged on the Stellenbosch GC in Stellenbosch.

Joining Adam in the South African province famed for its wine will be Ewen Ferguson, Connor Syme, Calum Hill and Scott Jamieson.

Jasieson was last into the event leaving Richie Ramsay as first reserve.

Heading the co-sanctioned DP World Tour/Sunshine Tour field will be Texan Patrick Reed, winner of the recent Dubai Desert Classic and Bahrain Championship, along with fellow Major champions in Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel.

Els is also a five-time winner of the South African Open while Schwartzel was runner-up in 2005 and 2015.
