LA 2028 Olympics Force R & A To Move Three ‘Open’ Championships Including 156th Open

The R&A today confirmed a major date change for the 2028 hosting of three of their biggest tournaments – The Open, the ISPS HANDA Senior Open and the AIG Women’s Open.

The championships are each being moved back a fortnight to avoid clashing with the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles which are being staged from 19-29 July.

The new dates are as follows:

  • The 156th Open, due to be held at Muirfield in Scotland, will be held from 30 July-6 August 2028.
  • The ISPS HANDA Senior Open will be held from 7-13 August 2028.
  • The AIG Women’s Open will be held from 14-20 August 2028.

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, said: “We have worked collaboratively with the relevant bodies and our partners to agree alternative dates for staging our major championships in 2028 to accommodate the Olympic golf competitions.

“We appreciate the constructive discussions we have had with all of the stakeholders and believe that providing clarity on the dates now will assist with the planning of the global golf calendar in 2028. We  can also confirm that The Open will be returning to its normal mid-July dates in 2029.”

While venues for all three major championships in 2028 will be confirmed in due course it is understood The 156th Open is heading to Muirfield, and to the east of Edinburgh and also for a first occasion since 2013 when Phil Mickelson won.
