However, Reed’s future participation could be in doubt having withdraw today from the second round of the BMW PGA Championship carrying a clearly injured left wrist.

Seven-time DP World Tour No. 1 Rory McIlroy is trailing in second place behind the American and spoke so eloquently of Reed and wishing him well, as any sportsperson would do, in a speedy return to full health.

“Unfortunately Patrick’s pulled out this week, which gives me an opportunity to try to claw back some ground that I lost last week in Ireland,” said McIlroy.

“This weekend is a big weekend for me to pick up a few points and make the race even tighter going into these last few weeks.”

It had apparent right from the outset of his second round Reed was in some discomfort having sent tee shot way left down the opening hole and requiring a penalty drop.

The Masters champ ended-up with a triple-bogey 7 and the pain in his wrist seemingly become more intense in taking bogey at the second hole, a double at the fourth, bogey at the fifth and then an even more hurtful double-bogey at the eighth ahead of par on nine before announcing to his playing partners he was withdrawing.

Reed and his caddy were met by a Tour official in a motorised buggy and conveyed straight to clubhouse in the Tour’s medical team.

And there was another past Masters champ in pain of a different kind with super Spaniard Jon Rahm missing the Wentworth cut after shooting scores of 78 and 77 for a shock 11-over tally.

Rahm’s 6-over 78 in the first round on Thursday was his highest score in a non-major since a 78 in the opening round of the Andalucia Masters in 2021.
