It’s been a best season of Matthew Fitzpatrick’s 12-year pro career winning four times including last week’s triumph at the FedEx Open De France.

Yes, he’s a US Open champion but three victories in one years on the PGA Tour, including defeating World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage and then teaming with his younger brother, Alex to succeed at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans ahead of returning to Europe and Sunday’s stunning 11th taste of DP World Tour success in France.

The World No. 4 is riding the crest of a golfing wave and looking to win for a second occasion at this week’s Dunhill Links Championship, again teaming with mum Susan as son and mother did so successfully three years ago here at the Home of Golf.

Fitzpatrick was asked by GolfByTourMiss if he’s been pinching himself given his success this year.

“I was talking to a friend yesterday about it,” he said. “Obviously it is nice to manage to achieve a lot of those wins and a lot of those great results. There’s definitely times, you know, you just forget about it and it’s easy to continue to the next one.

“But I’ve said before, sort of try to take it in a little bit more, some of these good results, and really try to enjoy them and make that a thing, I think is important.

“You never know when the next one is going to be. Hopefully it’s going to be this week. You have to take them when you can. Definitely try to enjoy it more.”

While always so honest in his dealings with the media, Fitzpatrick was asked that when he plays well, he believes in yourself though is it the other way round and should he not be believing in yourself first, and then you play well?

“Yeah, I mean, it’s a good question. I’d like to think I always do believe in myself, good or bad, but it’s probably a bit easier when you hit the shot that you’ve intended to hit rather than hitting it 40 yards right,” he said.

“That makes it a little bit more difficult. We all have our moments but you still kind of try and rely on confidence that you’ve built over the course of a few seasons.

“So I have belief in myself when I’m playing well, and to have a year like I have done, obviously it’s nice to match expectations for a change when I would say in golf, most of the time it doesn’t necessarily live up to your expectations. Yeah, it’s been a special year.”
