The Great Britain and Ireland side are one point clear heading to the final round of the 51st hosting of the Walker Cup as the team looks to end a five straight run of defeats at the hands of the rival Americans.
Indeed, the Walker Cup trophy itself has been in US hands since 2015 and this weekend GB & I is facing a Stars-and-Stripes outfit boasting seven of the world’s top 10 amateurs.
GB & I brushed that statistic aside taking Saturday morning’s opening round 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 ahead of staying in front at the end of the day in halving the eight-man Singles four wins apiece for the opening day to end with GB & I leading: 6 1/2 – USA 5 1/2.

One proud father after the Saturday afternoon matches was Ian Poulter father to Luke Poulter.
And while ‘Poults’ never competed in the Walker Cup he enjoys an excellent European Ryder Cup record of seven Ryder Cups between 2004 to 2021 (winners in 2004, 2010, 2014 and 2018) that included 15 matches, 8 wins and just 2 loses.
Luke commented ahead of the week: “Dad’s coming out this week, so I think it will be pretty cool for him to give us some insight and help us on our way.
“He never played a Walker Cup but he obviously has Ryder Cup knowledge, which is pretty similar to this. It’s amazing to see what he has achieved in Ryder Cups – it kind of gives me inspiration to try and follow in his footsteps.”
