England’s Paul Waring has taken big strides on golf’s traditional ‘moving day’ to put himself now very much in contention for a hopeful overall top-three effort heading into the final round of the Texas Childrens Houston Open.
Waring had muscled himself on day one into a one stroke lead and while day two didn’t go to plan in posting a one-over 71, the 41-year-old former Abu Dhabi HSBC champ got back into the overtaking lane on day three, posting a four-under 66 to share the clubhouse lead and tied with super talented Canadian lefty Sudarshan Yellamaraju at 10-under.
The 22-year old Yellamaraju birdied four of his closing five holes and continues to impress, teeing up this week in a first event since superbly sharing fifth place in last fortnight’s Players Championship.
At day’s end Waring was tied in seventh place
Local hero Gary Woodland is still the player to beat, birdieing two of his closing three holes in a round of a five-under 65 and lead by one shot at 18-under.
Dane Nicolai Hogjaard signed for a 63 to be just one shy of Woodland on 17-under and matching his playing partner Woodland with birdies also on 16 and 17.
Aussie and defending champ Min Woo Lee signed for a 67 to be sharing third on 12-under.
