Young German Upstages Multi-Winning Duo In Play-Off To Capture Maiden Tour Title

The multi-winning duo of former Masters champ Patrick Reed and double Tour winning Scot Calum Hill have been upstaged by little-known German Freddy Schott in capturing the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship.

Reed had brilliantly becounced back from a indifferent opening round 71 to post a closing 67 and set the last cluhouse lead at 17-under before being joined by Schott, who signed off with a 69.

Hill had set the golf course alight on day two, grabbing 11 birdies to end the day leading for four shots but then struggled over the weekend signing for a ‘Moving Day’ 72 and continued battling on day four as the reigning Joburg Open winner horribly bogeyed the last in a round of 71 and end on 17-under and sent the event into extra time.

It meant the trio heading back to the 18th with Schott and Hill recording pars while Reed, and last week’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic winner, bowing out with bogey ‘5’

Hill then saw his chances of a third Tour victory nose-dive again at 18 in taking a triple-bogey ‘7’ and leaving Schott the winner in posting a par ‘4’ in his 91st Tour event.

“It’s just amazing,” Schott said.

“I am extremely happy and surprised. Whenever there was a little bit of backfire, I just tried to stay in the moment. I could have done it the regular way, which would also have been fine. But to do it this way is even more special.”

Schott was born in Düsseldorf and became a scratch golfer when he was just 13 years old.   And if there is one person who will be enormously excited that will be his mentor Marcel Siem, whom he caddied for on the European Tour in 2020 to gain experience on tour.

The now 45-year-old Siem is a six-time DP World Tour champion with last win being the 2024 Italian Open.

Schott arrived in the oil-rich nation for his 91st DP World Tour event and with earnings of close to Euro 840,000 and with his first price effort, earning Euro 392, 282 easily taking his earnings well over the Euro 1 mark.

And in the bigger PGA Tour membership earning department, Schott jumps from 94th to ninth of the Race to Dubai money list.

Reed, who picked-up nearly Euro 200,000 for his effort, remains in second place and still behind South African Jayden Schaper.

Hill was looking to capture his third DPWT success but will look back to the 18th hole as his nemises.  He had birdied the 18th on day one and day two, walked off with a par on day three, but played the 18th in three over on day four.

If there’s any comfort for Hill, he has jumped from 71st to 16th on the Race to Dubai,
